Childhood fantasies sometimes last a person's whole life. Some furries just like anthropomorphic cartoons or dressing up like tigers. Others want something a bit deeper and more adult: more sexy; more yiffy; more taboo. Russ knows he's a furry, but is otherwise clueless. Can he come of age in the furry community, both online and in real life? Is having a second life always a good thing? And how do you deal with the world's wolves? All the intrinsic comedy of the furry experience meets some serious questions about growing up and the fluidity of sexuality in a decade of easy fantasy in a perky new musical that is unmistakeably contemporary.
Yiff! - A Furry Musical is currently in development. A draft of half of the plot was performed in studio before a series of key industry figures by professional actors in London, UK at the end of September 2007, and an improved repeat reading, with additional material, went on at the King's Head Theatre in Jan/Feb 2008. We're now following up some leads from that first showing and considering the next stage of development. The team have worked since Summer 2006 thru early 2008 sorting out major issues like the plot, the musical style and creating the songs for the first half, and now we're moving into Phase 2, where we attempt to improve the first half, and then complete the rest of the show. To realise the staging of the showcases, we've been collaborating with artist/animator Kyle Evans to create a series of animated projections that occupy a large screen at the rear of the stage - a window into the furry fantasy world. Our plan is to develop the show further, hopefully with help from producers, completing the script and looking into how we'll do the first full production. Edinburgh is a possibility. London also. There are no immediate plans for any performances outside the UK (but if you'd like to express interest in a professional production, get in touch!) A "demo" album will be launched sometime around the time of completing the first full draft. w t f ? Not sure what this is all about? Never heard of furries? Well, you could do worse than taking a look on Wikipedia or on YouTube. It won't tell you everything there is to know, but it might give you a sense of the theatrical potential. For those wanting tons of detail, there's a whole wiki devoted to furry at Wikifur. For a personal perspective on the whole experience, and to understand a little more about the emotional experience of being furry, you might be interested in looking at Syrras' Furry Tale. Or even, a whole series of furry etiological tales. For more detailed social context, see also Manawolf's guide, including its definition of "yiffy". Oh, and for another, somewhat different furry musical, see Chama C. Fox's Wolfland. |
